You’ve been thinking about this day for months, playing through each detail in your head. Hoping everything comes out perfect. As the guests start to filter in you see storm clouds gathering off on the horizon. Is there seriously going to rain on your wedding day? Believe it on not, rain on your wedding day can actually be viewed as good luck. Think about it, you are tying the proverbial knot and water makes knots tighter and stronger. Rain might just be magic for your wedding.
You’re smart, you knew there would be a chance of rain. Or, you’re smart and do your research. Getting yourself prepared for the chance of rain on your big day. With a little forethought, you can be ready to adapt to just about anything that comes your way. So if you have made the decision that spring is just too beautiful to not take advantage of for your wedding, I have a few ideas on how you can embrace the risk and look for beauty in a chance of rain. Below is how can you flip the script and stay as chill as a cucumber.
What can you do ahead of time?
- First things first, you need to speak up to both vendors and planners. These people are pros. More than likely they have dealt with issues like rain at past events. Ask them what they recommend, what their contingency plan is for if there is weather? Often, they will have suggestions for what actions and preparations are best suited for your venue and style of wedding.
Take Cover!
- Is your wedding, reception, or both outside? Look into renting a party tent. Have it set up, and if the rain gets out of hand, you can easily move things into the tent. That same tent will come in quite handy if the day is warmer than anticipated. There is going to be so much going on that day, having a backup plan will make you feel calm and prepared for anything.
What to wear.
- If rain is likely, consider hairstyles and footwear that is prepared for a little wind and water. Maybe you were playing with the idea of a bohemian hairstyle for your pictures. Check the weather, if the weatherman is telling you to be aware of gusts, you might want to consider having a way to tie back part of your hair so it won’t be in your face during pictures. Rainboots can add character and playfulness to your day and your pictures.
- What about getting cute umbrellas for your bridesmaids and guests? You could hand out blankets or mittens to guests as they arrive or if the weather starts to shift. Your guests will be so grateful you have thought of them on your big day. Not to mention watching your guests snuggle up together is a sure way to feel the love on your wedding day.
Have some fun!
- So you have a backup plan, you’ve checked all the boxes. What about the opportunity to have a little fun with the chance of rain? You may have not thought of it yet, but what about the opportunity for EPIC photos? Mother nature creates some of the best lighting and texture for dramatic images that are rich and ageless. Imagine photos of you catching raindrops on your tongue with your new husband. They just might be your favorite memory of the whole day. Or one of you dancing in the rain, laughing with your grandmother and mom. These are images that are going to reflect the beauty and love of your wedding day. Let the weather add to your day and your memories instead of subtracting them.
Who ya gonna call?
- In 5 years, rain is unlikely to make the memory bank highlights, so relax and “let the thunder roll” (if you will excuse my nerdy reference), have the day of your life! If you are looking for a photographer that has seen rain on wedding days, is adaptable, and can help you take advantage of the gifts from mother nature, I encourage you to reach out. About this session:
This was a rare day on the Oregon coast in the Spring. Surprisingly, it didn't rain on us ONCE. This beautiful couple danced and kissed near the Devil's Punch bowl in Depoe Bay, Oregon. The boho beach bridal vibes are absolutely stunning. Beach wedding photography on an overcast day might be my most favorite thing to photograph. However, that is completely up to mother nature and she is unpredictable when planning a wedding date. Although I am based in Utah and mainly photograph Utah weddings, I welcome the opportunity to travel for any wedding couple.
