Taking family photos at the Utah State Capitol Building is such a great idea! It doesn't matter whether your outfits are dressy or casual, it all looks good here. Chelsea and her family wanted a nice neutral background but wanted to keep their outfits casual. We shot this family photo session at the awkward time after fall and before winter. This can be a tricky time to schedule family photos. However, that doesn't mean you should have to wait for next spring. There are many different locations that look beautiful regardless of the weather or time of year. The state capitol is one of those places. Chelsea was most excited about the black iron gate backdrop. The stunning stone walls of the building offer a delightful backdrop for any type of photo session. I've photographed bridals, engagements, family and baptism photos at this location.
Are you ready for a blast from the past? It literally has nothing to do with photography but everything to do with the state capitol. Haha! In 1999 my family took a family roadtrip to Yellowstone National Park. On our drive through Wyoming, we got news that a tornado just ripped through Salt Lake City. Ummm...whaaat?! Utah's Salt Lake valley never sees tornados. It's mountain landscape that surrounds the valley deters tornados from forming. However, the mountains couldn't stop this tornado. It left the Utah State Capitol grounds in total destruction. Over 90 mature trees were uprooted from the grounds! Walking the grounds today, you'd never know that happened.
As of 12/31/2020 visitors are unable to enter the capitol building. However, the grounds are always open to the public. I love photographing all types of sessions at this location.
